LIVELIHOOD: WATER HARVESTING IRRIGATION AND LAND DEVELOPMENT

The livelihood prototype endeavors to identify opportunities for developing land and water resources in the identified tribal populated village. This comprises of developing the potential of local water resources through River by using Seven Nos. of Lift Irrigation- LI technique for irrigation and drought proofing to enhance productivity and reduce risk in farming. The SOLUTION (NGO), Jamshedpur is implementing this Project through water user Association targeting more than 70% tribal villages. Under the prototype scheme three years livelihood (SCA to TSP) Phase-VII.

Project Description Water Infrastructure Resource (LI)

Lift irrigation is based on the concept of lifting water from a lower point, most commonly a river, to a higher point of land where it is then guided to irrigate the required area of land. The main reason for the need for lift irrigation is the poor distribution of water rather than a lack of water. Water is lifted by means of a pump from the water source to the main delivery chamber situated at the highest point in the command area. Water is distributed and supplied through underground pipelines.

Project Major Component

  1. Training (Farmer Group)
  2. Water Resource Infrastructure Development-LI includes- supply installation of Diesel Pump set, Pump house, 700 M pipeline, 8 Nos. of outlet Valve in each of the site Total Site-07.

Project Major Activities

  1. Identification of Scheduled Tribe-populated villages.
  2. PRA exercise and selection of land holder Tribal members and location with pipeline maps finalization.
  3. Verification of selected members land through Circle Officer of the concerned Anchal.
  4. Water Infrastructure Creation as per the technically sanctioned estimate.
  5. Community and training to use LI and Scientific farming method.
  6. Finally, the created infrastructure was handed over to the Farmer Water User Group.

Impact Summary

The identified villages did not have irrigation infrastructure before the project was introduced. Although there is a river nearby, it was not sufficient to carry water for irrigation. Before the irrigation system was implemented, the growing season lasted only during the rainy season (i.e., June to September), and only one paddy crop could be cultivated. Now, multiple crops and vegetables can be grown throughout the year. As a result, income is generated, and livelihood opportunities are created.
