LIVELIHOOD : BACKYARD POULTRY
The project strategy is to empower lowland or landless Scheduled Tribe communities so that they are able to access opportunities for sustainable livelihoods. The main point of intervention is to establish and develop Self-Help Groups (SHGs). This project not only generates income but also provides permanent employment opportunities to unemployed Scheduled Tribe youth. Backyard poultry rearing can enhance household food security and contribute to poverty reduction.
Project Infrastructure Description
The project primarily focuses on infrastructure development for long term sustainability and providing training and knowledge-based income-generating techniques to selected tribes. A model shed has been constructed and handed over to the tribal farmers. In addition to chicks, all kinds of equipment, medicine, and poultry feed for the first three months have been distributed. Theoretical and hands-on practical training has also been provided by expert doctors.
Project Major Component
- Poultry rearing training for farmer groups, including medicine, vaccination, marketing, rearing, SHG document keeping, and meetings.
- 10 model poultry sheds constructed, training provided, 100 chicks per unit to all units, along with medicine and feed for 3 months.
Project Major Activities
- Identification of Scheduled Tribe-populated villages.
- PRA exercise and identification of small landholder tribal members, followed by location finalization for constructing the poultry shed.
- Verification of selected members land through the Circle Officer of the concerned Anchal.
- Poultry shed infrastructure construction as per the technically sanctioned estimate.
- Community and beneficiary training on rearing chicks.
- Finally, the constructed poultry shed infrastructure was handed over to the selected ST farmers and the SHG.
Impact Summary
After the project was implemented, it strengthened the socio-economic development, particularly for landless, poor, BPL tribal groups. Income has been generated and employment created for the selected farmers. A positive message has spread throughout the village and surrounding areas, and now more tribes are seeking to engage in the same traditional livestock business.
