LIVELIHOOD: INNOVATIVE MAHUA PROCESSING UNIT
Jharkhand literally means ‘land of forest’ where forests play a key role in the economic, cultural and social systems and the entire lives and livelihoods of a majority of the people revolve around forests and forestry particularly. Madhuca longifolia, commonly known as Mahua, is a tropical tree found largely in Jharkhand state, Mahua holds a special status in tribal livelihood systems in various ways. Apart from meeting food and other requirements, it is also an important source of seasonal income. The tree has also religious and aesthetic value intribal culture. In Jharkhand, Mahua provides valuable food components and a source of income to villagers, which was previously overlooked in a systematic way. There is a great scope for value addition through forest based small scale & large scale enterprises and is expected to increase both the income and employment opportunities for the rural & tribal people. Thus this Innovative Mahua Processing Project is Introduced in the Middle of Deep forest KUCHAI.
Project Infrastructure Description
Under the Project majorly trying to focus on Infrastructure development for long term sustainability through Mahua also by giving training and knowledge based income generating technique to the selected tribes. A model Mahua Processing Unit has constructed with Processing Machineries and equipments Installed for Villagers surrounded by Deep Forest and Naxal effected area.
Project Major Component
- A model estimated building has been constructed by the NGO.
- Machinery and equipment have been established and installed in the constructed unit.
- Training is a continuous process for villagers by the NGO.
- A government-linked Women SHG has been formed to support the collection and processing activities.
Project Major Activities
- Identification of Schedule tribes populated villages.
- PRA exercise and selection/identification of land for Establishing the Plant.
- Verification of selected land through the Circle Officer of the concerned Anchal, and land has been allotted to the NGO.
- Building infrastructure was constructed as per the technically sanctioned estimate.
- Community and beneficiary training organized.
- Finally, it was handed over to the trained Women SHG under the supervision and monitoring by SOLUTION NGO.
Impact Summary
After the Project has been implemented, it strengthened the socio-economic development and improves the living of standard of particularly the landless, Poor, BPL Tribal Groups. Income has been generated and employment created for the selected SHG group and villagers.
